Foodbanks and advice services in Kirklees to get £100,000 lifeline | The Welcome Centre

The Welcome Centre in Huddersfield is now reliant on over 50 per cent more volunteer hours per week than it needed in 2017 and we have to act now.

Clr Shabir Pandor, leader of Kirklees Council, said: “The pressures brought by the introduction of Universal Credit have seen an increase in referrals to the Fusion Food-bank in Dewsbury of over 300% in the past three years.

In addition to the funding approval, it was also agreed that the grants provided to Fusion food-bank, the Mission, Batley food-bank, The Welcome Centre and Kirklees Citizen’s Advice and Law Centre would rise in line with inflation.

Response from Ellie Coteau, Chief Exectuive of The Welcome Centre

We're incredibly grateful for the funding boost we're receiving from Kirklees Council. Sadly, the level of support we provide in Huddersfield increases year on year, and with it our costs. This funding will allow us to continue to deliver a high quality service to growing numbers of people in need.
