Longwood Sing raising money for The Welcome Centre | The Welcome Centre
Longwood sing

The Annual Longwood sing is now in its 149th year and is raising money for The Welcome Centre.

Longwood Sing will take place on Sunday 11th September around 2,30 pm at the outdoor sing amphitheatre next to Longwood tower with refreshments at St Mark's centre afterwards. One of the aims of the event is to raise money for the benefit of local charities.

This year they have selected the Welcome Centre in Huddersfield as their charity.

The Welcome Centre food bank is based in Huddersfield and we have been providing support to local people in crisis for over 25 years. The Welcome Centre can offer anyone in financial crisis support in the form of basic essentials such as food, toiletries, bedding, pet food, baby items, small electricals such as kettles and toasters as well as crockery and pots and pans. In addition, they can provide budgeting advice, access to grants for furniture and a wide range of signposting services for our clients. Life can change so quickly and for many people, a situation such as job loss, mental health problems or a relationship breakdown can leave them feeling vulnerable and in a financial pickle. That's why we're here to help, to offer support as well as a listening ear and to provide the steps to help people get back on their feet.

Emma Greenough manager of the welcome centre said

The Welcome Centre is delighted that Longwood Sing has chosen us as their charity for this event. We're looking forward to coming along on the day and getting involved. With so many excellent local charities in our area, it means a lot that we have been selected. At present, demand for our service is the highest it has ever been, and in the first half of this year, we have already provided 184,754 meals to local people in crisis. What concerns us most, is the number of children we now support each month has risen to more than 450 per month, a significant rise from two years ago, when we supported on average 220 children per month. All donations raised at Longwood Sing will go towards offering the best service we can to local people in crisis and ensuring no one goes hungry in our community this year.

Longwood sing President Dr Bert Jindal said

Longwood sing committee felt that the Welcome Centre was a deserving charity which could most help meet the needs of local people today.
