It may still be months away but The Welcome Centre is preparing for Christmas.
The winter months are always busy at the food bank. Budgets are squeezed due to higher heating bills and the additional costs of the festive season. So, to help ease the financial burden in the run-up to Christmas, The Welcome Centre gives each client an extra pack of food to cook a Christmas lunch at home.
What is the 50p pot challenge?
The challenge is simple; Take one old camera film pot provided by The Welcome Centre, fill your pot with 50 pence pieces – it fits a total of £12.50 and return to the food bank.
In 2018 our food bank provided 285 additional Christmas lunch parcels for those in need.
Last year in the two weeks before Christmas, The Welcome Centre gave out 285 Christmas lunch packs in addition to our standard crisis packs. 73 of those packs went to families with children under 16 years old.
How to get involved.
It’s easy to join the challenge and something all the family or the office can get involved with.
- Pots can be collected from The Welcome Centre at 15 Lord Street, Huddersfield Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 4.30pm or can be posted out.
- The pots need to be returned by the first week of December so that the Christmas packs can be prepared.
- All pots should be returned to the Lord Street office only.
Each pot comes with a Gift Aid form so if you are a taxpayer we can claim an additional 25%. If you struggle to return the 50 pence pieces you can make a donation via our online pages or send a cheque, made out to The Welcome Centre, inside the pot and return back to the centre.

Emma Greenough, Fundraising Manager explains
We’ve run this challenge for the past 3 years and it’s been really popular. Last year’s challenge raised just nearly £4,000 which was enough money to fund more than 300 Christmas packs to individuals and families.
This year we want to raise the same again.
This is a great office fundraiser, which everyone can get involved with.
