The Welcome Centre Signs the West Yorkshire Trauma Informed Charter | The Welcome Centre

We are delighted to announce that The Welcome Centre has officially signed up to the West Yorkshire Trauma Informed Charter.

The Charter aims to “set the scene” across West Yorkshire, supporting organisations and systems to embed trauma-informed and responsive approaches into their everyday practice. By signing up, we are strengthening our commitment to preventing trauma and adversity wherever possible, and to responding with care, compassion and understanding when they do occur.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma occurs when someone experiences stressful or distressing events that feel overwhelming or difficult to cope with. These experiences can lead to feelings of lacking control and may impact a person’s physical and mental wellbeing.

Trauma is deeply personal. It can affect anyone, at any stage of life, and each individual’s experience is unique.

What Is Trauma-Informed Practice?

Trauma-informed practice recognises the widespread impact trauma can have on individuals, families and communities. It focuses on creating safe, supportive and resilient environments where people feel heard, respected and empowered.

This approach is built on six key principles:

Safety – Ensuring people feel physically and emotionally secure

Trustworthiness – Being open, transparent and consistent

Peer Support – Valuing shared experiences and mutual support

Collaboration – Working together and sharing decision-making

Empowerment – Recognising strengths and promoting choice

Cultural Awareness – Respecting diversity and understanding different lived experiences

By embedding these principles into our everyday practice, we aim to provide services that are compassionate, inclusive and responsive to the needs of our community.

Our Commitment

As part of the Charter process, we carried out a thorough review of our organisational ethos, policies and day-to-day practice. We were proud to receive very positive feedback about the services and support we provide.

Receiving this recognition at the end of 2025 was a significant milestone for us. However, this is not the end of the journey. Throughout 2026 and beyond, we will continue to reflect, review and strengthen our approach to ensure we are providing the safest and most supportive environment possible.

Thank You

We would like to thank everyone who supports The Welcome Centre, from our staff and volunteers to our partners and supporters. Together, we are helping to create a safer, more understanding community for all.
