I was feeling really low. It’s hard being a single parent. It makes it even harder with a sick child.
Harriet’s son is 9 years old and developed a medical condition a few years ago which he's still being treated for. Because of the condition, he needs regular medication but the side effects are not easy to cope with.
The medication causes incontinence. Her son still needs nappies and has accidents during the night.
I was struggling with all the extra costs. I was buying nappies and replacement waterproof bedding to help my son. But, I was going through so many cleaning products.
Her son's school has supported the family for some time and referred her to The Welcome Centre. She received food, toiletries and cleaning products. The Welcome Centre also gave her suitable bedding and a stock of incontinence products.
Cath, Development Worker at The Welcome Centre, helped Harriet to secure a regular grant for the cost of the extra items he needs during his treatment. This should help ease the burden during a difficult time.
