What is the 50p pot challenge?
The challenge is simple; Take one old camera film pot provided by The Welcome Centre, fill your pot with 50 pence pieces – it fits a total of £12.50.
Return your pot to The Welcome Centre by 1st December and you’ll help provide someone with an extra parcel to make lunch at home on Christmas Day.
Emma Greenough, Fundraiser for The Welcome Centre said “We all know the build up to Christmas can be stressful. However, most of us look forward to sitting down with friends or family on Christmas Day, celebrating together. But for those receiving support from The Welcome Centre, making ends meet for the basics is hard enough. The additional cost of Christmas can be crippling. “
In 2017 we provided 251 additional Christmas lunch packs for those in need.
Last year in the two weeks before Christmas, The Welcome Centre gave out 251 Christmas lunch packs in addition to their standard crisis packs. 49 of those packs went to families with children under 16 years old.
Eleanor Pearson, Centre Manager for The Welcome Centre said “This year we’ve seen a significant increase in demand for our basic packs as people have struggled with Universal Credit. We expect to see that increase over the winter and want to make sure all those individuals and families receive a Christmas lunch pack if they need it. We hope it’ll help make Christmas a little bit easier.”
How to get involved.
It’s easy to join the challenge and something all the family or the office can get involved with.
- Pots can be collected from The Welcome Centre at 15 Lord Street, Huddersfield or can be posted out.
- The pots need to be returned by the first week of December so that the Christmas packs can be prepared.
- All pots should be returned to the Lord Street office only.
- Each pot comes with a Gift Aid form so if you are a taxpayer we can claim an additional 25%.
- If you struggle to return the 50 pence pieces you can make a donation via our online pages or send a cheque, made out to The Welcome Centre, inside the pot and return back to the centre.
Emma Greenough, Fundraiser for The Welcome Centre said “We’ve run this challenge for the last two years and it’s been really popular. Last year’s challenge raised just over £2,000 which was enough money to fund more than 180 Christmas packs to individuals and families. We actually gave out 251 Christmas packs last year. This year we want to raise enough money through the challenge to cover the cost of all the packs we give out, which we estimate will be closer to 300. So we need to raise £3,750. If any local businesses want a large number of pots delivering, please get in touch.”
Pots can be collected from The Welcome Centre at 15 Lord Street, Huddersfield, HD1 1QB between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday. If you would like a pot posting out please email Emma [email protected] or call 01484 515086.
